Child abuse group to host back-to-school event, showcasing child health and safety

As summer draws to a close, parents and children can prepare to return to school with help from the Child Abuse and Neglect Council. The Huron Learning Center is hosting the CAN Council Kid’s Academy on Tuesday August 2nd.

The CAN Council is a local non-profit organization “dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect through education, intervention and advocacy”.

“We want to help build a community free from child abuse and neglect through our advocacy programs, said Hannah Naples, Community Engagement Coordinator.

Napoli just made their debut in the group two years ago in August 2020, and this is their first time hosting the event.

“I’m delighted to see everyone come out,” Napoli said. “While kids are having fun, parents have a great opportunity to learn more.”

The group organizes many programs throughout the year with families and children. CAN Council has worked with many other organizations and local authorities, including police, the justice system and other child neglect advocacy groups throughout Huron County since 2019.

“We want to make sure children are taken care of while maintaining a safe environment,” Napoli said.

The Kid’s Academy will feature back-to-school gifts, kids’ activities, games and prizes, face painting and community resources for families.

“It’s a way for children to prepare to return to school while parents can learn about the services that are provided in the community,” Naples said. “We’ll have things for kids to do and play for while parents can learn about things that will be more mindful.”

This free event will focus on children’s health and safety, school readiness and well-being, as well as local resources available to families in the community. In addition to these activities, there will be distributions of school supplies and other items.

“I am delighted that the children are out and ready for school,” Napoli said. “I really want to help parents connect with these resources that are available.”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Huron Learning Center playground. Thumb Area Transit also offers free shuttles to the event. For more information on the event, visit the CAN Council Facebook page or call 989-752-7226.
